Wayan Sudiana is 15 years old and has multiple handicaps. He has learning difficulties, cerebral palsy and delayed physical development. APA Foundation was put into contact with Wayan by Stichting Senang Hati, where he receives physiotherapy. Wayan is able to move by shuffling or crawling across the floor. He can also use a wheelchair, which he received from Senang Hati, to move around slowly. Wayan lives alone with his father. His mother died some years ago. His father is a \u2018day labourer\u2019 and depends for an income on work he has to find each day. As a result, he has to leave Wayan on his own for several hours a day. Occasionally one of the neighbours can offer assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wayan and his father live in a solid brick house. The father does not have the money to keep the house well maintained or modify the facilities for Wayan. The house was built in the traditional style with two steps all round to avoid flooding. This means in practice that Wayan has great difficulty leaving or entering the house independently, and it is even impossible with a wheelchair.<\/p>\n

As there is no bathroom\/toilet (kamar mandi) in or near the house, father and son use the river in a ditch some distance from the house. Wayan\u2019s father carries him on his back. Wayan is still growing, however, and carrying him will be an increasing burden for his father and other carers. It is, therefore, difficult (and embarrassing) for Wayan to use the toilet during the day, especially if his father is not present, as there are no facilities nearby. He tries to look after himself as well as he can but sometimes cannot get further than a corner of the veranda or the garden. Wayan could, however, be able to reach a toilet using a wheelchair if it had access from the house.<\/p>\n

In consultation with the father, APA Foundation has drawn up a plan for housing modifications, which includes the construction of an adapted kamar mandi and which takes account of religious and traditional principles for siting the kamar mandi. A builder, supervised by Stichting Senang Hati, has carried out the housing modifications.<\/p>\n

A ramp has been built to connect the house by a path to the new kamar mandi which is accessible by wheelchair and equipped so Wayan can wash himself.<\/p>\n
