Gede Bona is 8 years old and has multiple handicaps. Bona visits Stichting High5Rehab. He lives alone with his father and mother as part of an extended family, partly because they are not very rich. They live in a single room which doubles up as a living room and bedroom. The doors are wide enough for the room to be accessible by wheelchair but both doors have difficult doorsteps. The adjacent covered veranda is not accessible by wheelchair because it is high above ground level.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Bona is still light, his father can lift him in his small wheelchair. His mother, however, finds this difficult. As a result, Bona is usually carried everywhere and makes almost no use of his wheelchair in and around the house. Looking to the future, it is already desirable to make the veranda accessible by wheelchair and to smooth the doorsteps so they can be crossed easily. The kamar mandi is accessible from indoors.<\/p>\n

The housing modifications have not yet been made but Bona has received a urinal in case he cannot get to the toilet.<\/span><\/p>\n

UPDATE 2007<\/strong><\/span>
<\/span>Last year, the plan was to make the small house and veranda accessible for the wheelchair. Circumstances prevented this but the family arranged for the work to be carried out. The veranda has also been given a roof and so there is more living space. There was no money over to modify the bathroom. APA Foundation made the bathroom wheelchair-accessible and adapted the interior to make it safer and easier to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
