Wayan Sumiasi<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>is 15-year-old girl. She relies entirely on her wheelchair and has limited hand and arm function and so she dependent on care from members of the family. Wayan\u2019s immediate family live with other relatives on a piece of land, and the old kamar mandi (bathroom and toilet) is at the back of the property. The bathroom is small, in dreadful condition and has a narrow doorway which makes it impossible to use from a wheelchair. It is increasingly difficult for her parents to lift and care for Wayan, who is now a fully-grown teenager. In addition the kamar mandi is built on a mound, and this makes carrying her inside even more difficult. After discussion, it was decided to enlarge the bathroom and relocate and widen the doorway so that Wayan can enter with the wheelchair. The interior is being modernised and made suitable for her care. Outside, a gentle slope makes the kamar mandi wheelchair-accessible and the path across the property to the bathroom has been levelled and hardened so that the wheelchair can be moved more easily.<\/span><\/p>\n

UPDATE<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
During construction, the walls, which were to be maintained, were found not to withstand the work. The walls had to be partially rebuilt. The family has also been closely involved in the renovation, so that the adjustments are actually tailor-made. In the end, more work was done than anticipated, but there is now a bathroom that has been adapted for the use of Wayan and her care-takers.<\/p>\n
