PROJECT Meal project

SPONSOR APA Foundation

This project is a forerunner of a new form of aid that APA Foundation wants to offer in the future. The design of this project, as it has now started is in Restaurant Semina, Lovina, is to offer specially selected dishes carrying a small supplement of Rp. 5,000 (€ 0.45) to the price to assist APA Foundation projects. After discussions, the owner has agreed that the dishes can be offered for a reasonable price. Even after the extra Rp. 5,000 for APA Foundation, the overall price is about the same as similar dishes on the restaurant's menu, for example, the overall price of a main course is Rp. 20,000 and a side dish is Rp. 10,000. APA Foundation has been able to add five traditional vegetarian dishes to the normal menu as "APA Care Meals". The APA menu includes a brief description of the work of APA Foundation and an explanation of how the work can be supported by ordering an APA Care Meal.

Diners can order dishes as they wish and each comes with a ticket with a value of Rp. 5,000. The diner is asked to deposit the ticket in a cash box which is emptied regularly by a mediator of APA Foundation. Each ticket is worth Rp. 5,000 which is collected from the restaurant. The menu also suggests that guests who do not wish to order a dish but want to support the aims of the foundation can make a donation.
The Semina Restaurant is a "friendly" restaurant with a good kitchen offering a range of traditional meals. If there are enough guests, a dance performance is arranged each evening. The owner has worked for needy people for some time. He is not paid for his co-operation, but can benefit from the PR and goodwill of the diners.

This project has a two aims. The first is to help finance mainly local projects of APA Foundation and to draw current problems to the attention of a wider public, in particular bringing the situation of handicapped people in Bali to the attention of tourists. The second aim is that elements serve as a try-out for the "Meal Project" for street children that APA Foundation wants to start in the future. It is a way to find out if diners/tourists are prepared to order a meal or side-order to support a good cause. It can also build up experience in the future in setting up a restaurant to offer street children free meals. A longer term aim is to expand the range of assistance to this target group from the Meal Project.
There will also be an investigation of whether such a restaurant could employ young people with a handicap.

UPDATE 2006

Income Rp. 589,150 / € 54,–

The meal project in the Semina restaurant was stopped after a short time when the owner of the restaurant decided to cancel the agreement. We regret this very much. All the more because the project was going well and had collected Rp. 589,150 in only a few weeks.
APA Foundation still believes that the project has succeeded to a significant extent as it was a pilot project that showed that the ‘formula’ works.

The meal project, in the form of a pilot project, has been suspended. We are examining ways of restarting this project.
